Ypres and the Somme

Menin Gate memorial in YpresThe First World War was one of the bloodiest conflicts to ever take place. The Great War, as it was known, was partly responsible for massive political changes that had a massive impact on the modern world. Our school trips to the WWI Battlefields will give your students a brilliant educational opportunity to really comprehend the events of 1914-1918. Our battlefield tours cover the events of the First World War in the Ypres Salient and Somme regions, enabling your pupils to learn from a wealth of important historical sites and excursions.

Sample Itinerary

DAY 1:  Morning departure from school. We travel to Belgium and our overnight accommodation in the Ypres area

DAY 2: Morning guided tour of the battlefields and cemeteries, to include Essex Farm and Tyne Cot cemeteries. Afternoon visit to the In Flanders Fields Museum in Ypres, followed by free time in the city. In the evening we will attend the daily ‘last post’ ceremony at the world famous Menin Gate in Ypres.

DAY 3: Morning visit to the Passchendaele Memorial Museum followed by time at a chocolate makers or cheese farm. Evening bowling.

DAY 4: Depart after breakfast and return to the UK.

The Peace Village Hostel, situated in rural Messines, is the ideal group accommodation and base for a visit to Flanders Fields and the Ypres Salient. The hostel overlooks the Messines ridge battlefield of Belgium's smallest city with landmarks such as the Island of Ireland Peace Park and the New Zealand Memorial to the Missing.

The Hostel excels in tranquility, space and offers great facilities. It's perfectly equipped to accommodate both medium size and large groups. We can welcome up to 165 guests in 43 studios, each with their own living and sleeping area and en-suite facilities. Our evening activities and bar help to keep groups occupied in the evening whilst you enjoy the beautiful sunset on Kemmel hill.
